In November of 2014, men incarcerated in prison in Pine Bluff, AR were invited to participate in a creative writing intensive after attending a staged reading of the work of women in prison as performed by professional actresses. They wrote their own staged reading in response.
The NWA Prison Story Project has been providing creative writing classes for women in prison for over 3 years. Their writing is edited into a staged reading and performed by professional actresses for the NWA community. There have been 4 such staged readings to date.
The project excerpted pieces from all 4 scripts and travelled a staged reading to the Randall L. Williams Correction Center in Pine Bluff and performed the staged reading for about 200 prisoners and staff. The next day, the project’s creative writing team led 20 men in a creative writing intensive, resulting in a powerful script that will be performed on Saturday, February 7 at the Fayetteville Underground at 7:30pm.
The performance is free, although a suggested donation of $10 is encouraged. Seating is limited and reservations are suggested.
